The Peoples Temple
Let’s start of with the Peoples Temple’s fearless leader, Jim Jones. He first received a lot of attention for his movement when he began preaching about racial equality, something that seemed very futuristic at the time. As all cults leaders tend to be, he was a very charismatic leader and it was not long before he had a huge following.
The next logical step to building a successful cult is to build and establish a place where all the worshippers can meet up and doing scary cult shit. For the Peoples Temple, this compound was located in Guyana, South America. This was an ideal location because it kept the compound private.
But the strangest, most unusual part of the cult was when it met its untimely end. In 1978, Jones convinced more than 900 of his followers (men, women, and we certainly can’t forget about the children) to drink literal poison masked as Kool-Aid. No one survived. Imagine being the officials who stubbled on that crime scene!
Will you drink the Kool-Aid?
