I first heard about cadaver dogs when watching the Netflix documentary “The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann”. They had brought a cadaver dog in to inspect the hotel they were staying at as well as the rental car they were using. As soon as the dog entered the room, alarm bells started ringing. This cadaver dog was one of the reasons why the parents were considered suspects.
After watching this documentary and learning about our four legged friends, I decided to do some research. It seems that cadaver dogs are not considered a very reliable source of evidence. It all depends on how long the body has been removed from the scene or how many remains are available.
They are most unreliable when there is an absence of a body as the scent of death does not linger. So yes, cadaver dogs have done a great job of finding remains of people who have been buried for months, if not years. The main variable for reliability of cadaver dogs is if there are remains present or not.
Reliable or not, it’s a good excuse to hang out with dogs at work!
